Oefening 2

A healthy spirit in a healthy body

Mother: So, are you there at last? You are a little late!

Henk: Yes, I’m sorry. We played so nicely!

Mother: Where did you play tennis?

Henk: ?? played to almost six o’clock. And then we looked for a while at a couple of other matches. It was very exciting.

Mother: Did June play well? She looks very sporty.

Henk: Yes, she is also good.

Mother: Did she win?

Henk: That I am not saying.

Mother: Why not?

Henk: For no reason.

Mother: Certainly since she is a girl and you don’t like it when a girl beats you.

Henk: Maybe.

Mother: I am going swimming with Mrs. De Hoogh this afternoon. Today I want to do twenty laps. Last time I did fifteen.

Henk: Is Aunt Jane also going along?

Mother: No, she doesn’t swim. In America she plays golf.

Henk: Oh, I know nothing about that. Only that you hit a little ball very hard with a stick, then you walk a kilometer and then you hit the little ball again, and so forth.

Mother: Yes, it also seems very boring to me.

Henk: Yes, to me also.

Henk: And what does Uncle Cor do?

Mother: He plays racquetball. Do you know what that is?

Henk: Yes, just like squash, I think. You play it also in a hall but not with a racquet with such a short handle. You play it against the wall, just as in squash. The two players hit the ball in turn against the wall.

Mother: Then you must certainly also be very fit for that. I prefer to go one or two times a week to swim a few laps.

Henk: And do you know what Jim does?

Mother: You do mean for sport. No, I don’t know.

Henk: He plays basketball. You do know what that is.

Mother: Yes, I know. ‘Basket’ is ‘mand’ in Dutch. You play it in a hall and you must throw a ball in a basket. There are six players per side, I think.

Henk: I think five.

Mother: Together we know a whole lot of sport, I see.

Henk: Yes, that’s right. And we both also think sport is important for health.

Mother: Do you know what the Latin proverb `mens sana in corpore sano' means?

Henk: No, my Latin is not so strong.

Mother: That means ‘a healthy spirit in a healthy body’.

Henk: That is nice.

Mother: In general that is so. There are also exceptions.

Henk: Which then?

Mother: U.S. President Roosevelt didn’t have a healthy body but he had a healthy spirit.

Note – `mens sana in corpore sano' actually translates as “and ask them (the gods) only for bodily and mental health”
